Angel City FC strengthened its postseason hopes with a decisive 3-1 victory over Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday, September 16, at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. Facing a Seattle side sitting directly ahead of them in the NWSL standings, Angel City produced a confident performance in a match carrying significant playoff implications. Ally Sentnor, Ary Borges and Taylor Suarez provided the goals as ACFC reached 10 victories in a season for the first time in club history and continued a strong late-season surge.
The opening stages were relatively balanced, with Seattle keeping its share of possession while Angel City looked for opportunities to attack quickly. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute after a handball was called against Seattle inside the penalty area. Sentnor stepped to the spot and calmly converted the penalty to give Angel City a 1-0 advantage. It was her fourth goal of the season and her second straight match scoring from the penalty spot after also converting against Denver Summit FC five days earlier.
Seattle nearly responded only minutes later. Veteran midfielder Jess Fishlock found enough space to send an attempt toward goal in the 25th minute, but her shot struck the left post. Angel City survived the danger and quickly cleared the loose ball before the Reign could capitalize. Instead, Angel City doubled its advantage before halftime. After a corner in the 40th minute, Evelyn Shores delivered the ball back into the penalty area, where Borges rose to meet it and directed a header into the bottom-left corner. The goal was Borges' third of the 2026 campaign and sent ACFC into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The Reign finished the night with a slight edge in possession at just over 51 percent, but Angel City generated the greater volume of attempts, finishing with 14 shots compared with Seattle's eight. With Seattle still looking for a way back into the contest, Angel City delivered the decisive third goal in spectacular fashion. Rookie Taylor Suarez entered as a substitute in the 81st minute and needed just 21 seconds to find the net. Suarez collected the ball, attacked the opening in Seattle's defense and drove a finish into the top-right corner to make it 3-0. Shores supplied her second assist of the evening, while Suarez recorded the second goal of her rookie season.
Suarez's immediate impact also put her into the NWSL record book. Her goal just 21 seconds after entering the game became the fastest goal scored by an in-game substitute in league history. The finish highlighted the depth available to interim head coach Leif Smerud and provided another encouraging moment from one of Angel City's young players. With the match still carrying considerable pressure because of the crowded playoff race, the third goal gave ACFC the breathing room it needed to see out the closing stages.
Seattle avoided the shutout in second-half stoppage time when Sofia Huerta produced an impressive long-range strike in the 92nd minute. The late goal made the final score 3-1, but it did little to change a night controlled in the decisive moments by Angel City. Anderson finished with two saves, while ACFC's defensive group limited Seattle to three shots on target despite the Reign completing more passes and spending considerable stretches with the ball.
The victory improved Angel City's record to 10-8-6 and moved ACFC to 36 points, just one point behind eighth-place Seattle in the race for a postseason berth. It also extended an impressive attacking run, with Angel City scoring multiple goals in four consecutive matches for the first time in club history.
