San Diego Wave FC’s return to Snapdragon Stadium ended in frustration Saturday night as Angel City FC earned a 2-0 victory in the latest meeting between the Southern California rivals. Maiara Niehues and Ary Borges supplied the goals for the visitors, who punished San Diego’s early defensive mistakes before protecting their advantage through the final whistle.
Angel City moved ahead in the 17th minute after Jun Endo delivered a cross into the penalty area. Goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo could not secure the ball, allowing Niehues to beat Perle Morroni to it and direct a header into the net. The goal continued a productive stretch for Niehues, who scored for the fourth consecutive match.
San Diego’s problems deepened only nine minutes later. A long throw into the box bounced through traffic and reached Borges, who controlled the ball with her chest before guiding a composed finish past Agudelo. The quick pair of goals forced the Wave to chase the match against an Angel City side prepared to defend compactly and attack open spaces.
The visitors encountered their own setback in the first half when Endo suffered a non-contact injury and required assistance leaving the field. Despite losing the player responsible for creating the opening goal, Angel City carried its two-goal advantage into halftime and remained disciplined after the break.
San Diego responded with significant changes, introducing Trinity Byars and Lia Godfrey at halftime before adding Hannah Lundkvist Fazer and other attacking options later in the match. The Wave increased the tempo, pushed more players into advanced positions and spent long stretches operating inside Angel City’s defensive half.
The pressure produced a statistical advantage but not a breakthrough. San Diego finished with 63 percent possession, outshot Angel City 18-12 and earned 10 corner kicks, all of which came during the second half. The Wave also recorded 12 shots after halftime while holding 71 percent of the possession during that period.
Angelina Anderson repeatedly frustrated the hosts, making six saves to preserve Angel City’s clean sheet. San Diego’s best opportunity arrived late when Kimmi Ascanio was brought down inside the penalty area, giving the Wave a chance to reduce the deficit and create a tense finish.
Godfrey stepped forward for the penalty in the 85th minute, but her attempt struck the post and deflected behind for a corner. The miss summarized a difficult evening for San Diego, which generated enough pressure to threaten Angel City but could not turn its possession and shooting volume into a goal.
The defeat ended San Diego’s 242-minute shutout streak in front of an announced crowd of 15,881 and dropped the Wave to 9-5-1. San Diego will now look to recover on the road when it visits the Kansas City Current on Friday, July 17, while Angel City leaves Snapdragon Stadium with a second consecutive shutout victory.
