LAFC continued its torrid run of form Saturday night, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City at BMO Stadium. Three first-half goals put the match firmly in the Black & Gold’s control before Denis Bouanga completed his brace late in the second half. The victory was LAFC’s fourth consecutive MLS win and improved the club to 10-5-3 with 33 points.
Son Heung-min wasted almost no time putting LAFC ahead. In the fifth minute, a Kansas City challenge in midfield sent the ball into Son’s path, allowing the South Korean star to break toward goal and finish past goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland. After a VAR review allowed the goal to stand, Son had his third goal of the season and had scored in all three of LAFC’s matches since returning from the World Cup break.
Sporting Kansas City responded by controlling stretches of possession, but LAFC appeared comfortable allowing the visitors to move forward before attacking the space left behind. Kansas City struggled to turn its possession into meaningful chances, while LAFC’s speed made nearly every turnover dangerous. The contrast became increasingly obvious as the first half progressed.
Bouanga delivered the second blow in the 37th minute. Mathieu Choinière helped launch the transition, sending Bouanga behind the Sporting defense before the forward held off the pressure and finished for his ninth MLS goal of the season. It was another example of the direct, ruthless counterattacking style that has made LAFC especially dangerous since league play resumed.
The home side struck again deep into first-half stoppage time. Bouanga released David Martínez into open space, and the 20-year-old attacker converted in the 45th minute plus four minutes of stoppage time to give LAFC a commanding 3-0 advantage. Martínez’s sixth goal of the season meant every member of LAFC’s starting front three had scored before halftime.
Kansas City attempted to push higher after the break, but LAFC’s defense refused to provide a path back into the match. Sporting did not register its first shot on target until the 77th minute, when Zorhan Bassong tested Hugo Lloris from outside the penalty area. Lloris made the save and otherwise endured a relatively quiet evening behind a disciplined defensive performance.
Bouanga then turned the convincing win into a rout in the 85th minute. Ryan Porteous sent a long ball forward to substitute Tyler Boyd, who supplied Bouanga for the finish. The goal gave Bouanga his second of the night and his 10th in 17 MLS appearances this season, completing a performance in which his combination of pace, strength and movement repeatedly exposed Kansas City in transition.
The statistics reflected just how clinical LAFC had been. Both teams finished with eight shots, and Sporting actually held a slight 51-to-49 percent advantage in possession, yet LAFC put five efforts on target compared with Kansas City’s one. The Black & Gold also produced 1.7 expected goals to Sporting’s 0.2, while Lloris recorded his league-leading 10th clean sheet of the season.
More importantly, LAFC carried its post-World Cup momentum into another emphatic result. Son and Bouanga have each scored in all three league matches since the break, with LAFC outscoring the Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City by a combined 10-1. With 33 points and 10 victories, the Black & Gold moved level with Vancouver and San Jose near the top of the Western Conference and now take their four-match winning streak on the road for a meeting with the Whitecaps.
