SAN DIEGO — San Diego Wave FC returned from the NWSL summer break with a statement, beating Gotham FC, 2-0, on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium to maintain its place atop the league table.
The breakthrough came in the 45th minute, when Kennedy Wesley found Melanie Barcenas in space and the 18-year-old forward delivered a decisive strike from distance. Barcenas’ goal gave San Diego control just before halftime and forced Gotham to chase the game after the break.
Gotham had its moments, especially early, but San Diego goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo stood firm in her NWSL debut. Esther González sent an early chance just wide, and Jordynn Dudley later tested Agudelo, but the Wave kept the visitors off the board.
The second half brought more pressure from Gotham, including a dangerous look from Rose Lavelle in the 75th minute. Agudelo answered again, helping San Diego preserve the clean sheet against a Gotham side that entered the night on a strong unbeaten run in league play.
San Diego did not dominate every statistical category, but it made the biggest moments count. Both teams finished with 15 shots, while Gotham held more possession and earned six corners, yet the Wave were sharper in front of goal and more secure in the decisive defensive sequences.
The clincher arrived in stoppage time. Tatum Wynalda pressured Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger outside the penalty area, Lia Godfrey quickly played Trinity Byars behind the back line, and Byars calmly finished into the open net in the 90th-plus-third minute.
The goal was Byars’ fourth of the season, while Barcenas’ opener was her third. Wesley’s assist on the first goal was the first of her professional career, and the result gave San Diego its fourth clean sheet of the 2026 campaign.
For Gotham, the loss snapped a three-month unbeaten stretch in regular-season play and dropped the club to 6-3-3 with 21 points. Despite matching San Diego’s shot total, Gotham could not turn its attacking stretches into a goal.
For San Diego, the win improved the Wave to 9-4-1 with 28 points and kept them four points clear of Washington near the top of the table. With Angel City FC next up at Snapdragon Stadium, the Wave now carry both momentum and a stronger grip on first place.
