Nigeria's Falconets have played in every FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup since the tournament began in 2002. They have been to two finals. They have never drawn a tougher opening assignment than this one, and on Monday evening in Sosnowiec it showed.
Spain, champions in 2022 and runners-up in 2024, took the lead in the 13th minute and never really looked like giving it up. Marisa García got the goal, finishing from close range after Nigeria failed to deal with a low ball into the box. It was the kind of goal that comes from a defense not quite set and an attacking side that had already been on the front foot for ten minutes.
Moses Aduku sent out Christiana Uzoma in goal with Onyedikachi Ekezie, Jumai Adebayo and Tumininu Adeshina across the back. Favour Nkwocha, Kafayat Mafisere, Tosin Rafiu and Rebecca Adegbemile filled the midfield, and Queen Joseph, Folajomi Olabiyi and Mary Mamudu started up front. It is a young group that arrived in Poland off a long preparation camp and a 1-0 friendly win over the hosts, with Mamudu scoring that one.
The early goal took the game away from the plan. Spain settled into the possession rhythm they are known for at this level, keeping the ball moving and giving Nigeria very little to press against. The Falconets did not get anything clean going before the interval, and they went to the break a goal down without having tested Spain much.
Aduku made a double change at halftime, bringing on Victory Lucky and Precious Oscar for Adeshina and Olabiyi, and for a while it looked like a reasonable gamble. Nigeria came out with more intent, played more directly, and used their physical edge to unsettle Spain in a way they had not managed in the first half. Oscar got a look at goal and put it wide. The Spanish keeper had to be sharp on a couple of occasions.
But committing bodies forward against a team this comfortable in possession is a trade, and Spain collected on it in the 72nd minute. Nigeria could not clear their lines, Spain recovered the ball and worked it through the box with a short sequence of passes, and Alba Cerrato finished at the near post past Uzoma. Cerrato had been on the field for six minutes.
That was the game. Aduku brought on Chisom Nwachukwu for Nkwocha immediately after, and Ramotalahi Kareem came on later, but there was no route back. Spain saw out the last twenty minutes without any real alarm and took the full three points from their opener.
Two goals, two Nigerian defensive lapses. That is a hard thing to swallow when the rest of the performance had improvement in it, and it is also exactly the margin that separates teams at this stage of a World Cup. Spain did not have to do anything spectacular. They just had to stay patient and wait.
The group does not get any friendlier. In the other Group F fixture at Arena Sosnowiec, China beat tournament debutants New Caledonia 5-0 to go top on goal difference. Nigeria now faces China on Thursday, September 10, at the same venue, and that match has become close to must-win if the Falconets want to be playing in the knockout round. New Caledonia is the final group fixture, on Sunday, September 13 in Łódź.
Spain, meanwhile, gets New Caledonia on Thursday and will fancy adding to their goal difference before the group closes out.
