Angel City FC’s unbeaten start came to a tense end Saturday night at BMO Stadium, where Utah Royals FC claimed a 1-0 road victory in a matchup between two early-season NWSL contenders.
The decisive moment arrived in the 33rd minute, when Paige Cronin drove down the right side and served a cross into the middle of the box. Cloé Lacasse met it with a header, guiding the ball inside the post to put Utah in front.
Angel City had more of the ball for stretches and finished with a 9-5 edge in total shots, but Utah’s defensive shape and goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn’s steady performance kept the home side off the board.
The match shifted sharply before halftime when Angel City midfielder Maiara Niehues was shown a red card while trying to retrieve the ball for a free kick. That left ACFC chasing the match with 10 players for the entire second half.
Despite the disadvantage, Angel City responded with urgency after the break. The home side pushed numbers forward, pressed higher, and created several of the match’s most dangerous chances while trying to rescue a point.
Sveindís Jónsdóttir nearly found the equalizer in the 77th minute after Taylor Suarez picked her out with a low pass into the penalty area, but McGlynn blocked the attempt to preserve Utah’s lead.
Suarez later came close herself, striking from the left side of the box and sending an effort into the outside netting. The sequence reflected Angel City’s second-half pressure, but also the narrow margins that defined the night.
The hosts also saw a potential lifeline disappear after a lengthy video review in the 70th minute. Angel City was initially awarded a penalty when Priscila Chilufya went down near the edge of the box, but the decision was overturned after review.
For Utah, the win marked a club-record fourth straight victory, a third consecutive shutout, and another statement result during a strong early-season climb. For Angel City, the loss was frustrating but not without positives, especially the fight shown after going down a player.
Angel City left BMO Stadium with lessons to carry forward: start faster, sharpen the final touch, and turn late pressure into goals. Utah, meanwhile, departed Los Angeles with three points and growing confidence as one of the league’s hottest teams.
