San Diego Wave FC spent most of Sunday night chasing a match that tilted almost immediately, falling 1-0 to Bay FC at Snapdragon Stadium after an early breakthrough proved decisive.
Bay FC struck in the fifth minute, when Taylor Huff slipped a ball through San Diego’s back line and Racheal Kundananji finished first time with her left foot. The goal, Kundananji’s first of the 2026 season, gave the visitors a lead they would spend the rest of the match protecting.
San Diego had a quick opportunity to reset the game from the penalty spot. Kenza Dali stepped up in the 17th minute, but Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz denied the attempt, preserving the advantage and shifting momentum back toward the visitors.
The miss became the defining moment of the first half for the Wave, who settled into longer spells of possession but could not turn control into a goal. Bay FC defended with discipline, forcing San Diego to work through crowded central areas and take chances under pressure.
The Wave still created enough to keep the result in doubt. San Diego finished with 14 total shots and six on target, while Bay FC had 10 shots and three on frame, but the home side could not solve Silkowitz.
As the second half stretched on, San Diego pushed numbers forward and looked for service into dangerous spaces. Dudinha, Ludmila, Dali and the Wave’s late attacking changes helped keep Bay FC pinned back at times, but the final touch never arrived.
Bay FC’s defensive effort grew stronger as the match tightened. Silkowitz’s penalty save stood out as the headline moment, but her clean sheet also required steady handling, strong positioning and a back line willing to absorb pressure.
For San Diego, the loss was frustrating because the margins were so thin. One early lapse, one missed penalty and several unfinished attacks turned a competitive home performance into a second straight setback.
The Wave’s response will matter quickly, with another high-profile California matchup ahead against Angel City FC. After being shut out at home, San Diego will need sharper finishing to turn possession and pressure back into points.
