The LA Galaxy returned to action with an encouraging result Saturday night, defeating Club América 1-0 in an international friendly at Dignity Health Sports Park. Joseph Paintsil supplied the decisive goal in the first half, while a disciplined defensive performance allowed the Galaxy to protect their narrow advantage through the final whistle.
The July 11 matchup brought together two of the most decorated clubs in North American soccer and attracted a crowd of 18,812. It was the Galaxy’s first match played in front of supporters in 49 days, creating an energetic atmosphere that included a sizable contingent of América fans inside the Carson stadium.
Both teams approached the opening minutes with intensity despite the exhibition setting. América attempted to control possession and build through midfield, while the Galaxy looked to move forward quickly after winning the ball. The visitors gradually began seeing more of the ball, but the Galaxy remained organized and prevented Henry Martín and the América attack from creating a clear early opportunity.
The breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute following a Galaxy set piece. Marco Reus delivered a free kick into the penalty area, where defender Jakob Glesnes redirected the ball with his head. Paintsil reacted quickest near the goal and finished from close range past goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota to put Los Angeles ahead.
América responded by pushing higher up the field and increasing the pressure before halftime. Erick Sánchez, Alan Cervantes and Raphael Veiga tried to create openings through the center and wide areas, but the Galaxy’s back line held firm. Novak Mićović remained composed in goal, and Los Angeles carried its 1-0 lead into the break.
Galaxy coach Greg Vanney made a change at halftime, replacing Paintsil with Julián Aude, but the home side maintained its defensive shape. América controlled longer stretches of possession after the restart and attempted to stretch the Galaxy along the wings, yet its attacks frequently stalled before producing a dangerous final pass or shot.
Los Angeles became increasingly focused on protecting the lead as the second half progressed. Edwin Cerrillo and Lucas Sanabria worked to disrupt América’s buildup in midfield, while Glesnes, Justin Haak, John Nelson and Miki Yamane dealt with crosses and movement around the penalty area. When space became available, the Galaxy attempted to counterattack rather than committing large numbers forward.
The closing stages belonged largely to América, which pushed players into attacking positions in search of an equalizer. Crosses and sustained possession forced the Galaxy to defend deep, but the home side showed patience and concentration. Mićović completed the clean sheet as América finished the evening without finding the goal that would have extended the contest.
Although the result will not count in the MLS standings, the victory provided the Galaxy with useful preparation and momentum before returning to league competition. Los Angeles will resume its regular-season schedule against rival LAFC on Friday, July 17, at Dignity Health Sports Park, with Paintsil’s goal and the team’s defensive resilience offering positive signs ahead of the latest edition of El Tráfico.
