San Diego Wave FC strengthened its position in the NWSL playoff race with a 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Current on Friday, September 18, at Snapdragon Stadium. After a scoreless opening half, the Wave broke through early in the second period before Kennedy Wesley secured all three points with a stoppage-time header. The victory moved San Diego to 14-8-3 and 45 points while continuing a strong run of results at home as the regular season enters its decisive final weeks.
Kansas City applied much of the early pressure, forcing San Diego goalkeeper Sandra Paños to be alert from the opening minutes. The Current looked dangerous when they were able to force turnovers and attack quickly, but Paños and the Wave back line prevented those opportunities from turning into an early advantage. San Diego gradually settled into the game and began finding more space going forward, with Trinity Byars, Melanie Barcenas and Gia Corley among the players involved in the team's most promising first-half attacks.
The Wave's ability to withstand Kansas City's pressure proved important as the first half progressed. Captain Kenza Dali helped San Diego establish greater control in possession, while the hosts looked for opportunities to play through Kansas City's press rather than simply surrendering the ball. The decisive sequence came as the match entered its final minutes. Gabi Portilho was brought down just outside the Kansas City penalty area, creating a dangerous free-kick opportunity for San Diego. Rouse received her second yellow card for the challenge and was sent off, leaving the Current with 10 players. Dali stepped over the resulting set piece and delivered a curling ball into the penalty area, where Wesley redirected it with a header beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner in the 91st minute.
Wesley's goal provided an emphatic finish to a significant night for the defender. It was her second goal of the 2026 season, while she also surpassed 5,000 NWSL minutes played for San Diego. Dali received the assist, her third of the season and sixth as a Wave player. Paños, meanwhile, completed the night with the second NWSL clean sheet of her career after helping keep Kansas City off the scoreboard through several threatening stretches of the match.
The result also carried historical significance for San Diego. The Wave snapped a six-match league winless streak against Kansas City dating back to September 2023 and earned their first home victory over the Current. San Diego also extended its single-season club records to 14 wins and 45 points while recording an eighth home victory. The Wave have been especially effective after taking the lead this season, improving to 12-0-3 in matches in which they have scored first.
With five regular-season matches remaining, San Diego has given itself an opportunity to fight for favorable playoff positioning during the closing stretch. The combination of another disciplined defensive performance and timely second-half attacking play against Kansas City offered another encouraging example of the team's ability to handle a tight match. The Wave will now take that momentum on the road, traveling to Lynn Family Stadium to face Racing Louisville on Friday, September 25, as the postseason race continues to intensify.
