San Diego Wave FC could not turn sustained attacking pressure into goals Sunday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Seattle Reign FC on July 26 at Snapdragon Stadium. The defeat dropped San Diego to 9-6-2 with 29 points, while Seattle improved to 6-7-2 after taking advantage of two early opportunities that ultimately decided the match.
Seattle opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Maddie Mercado. Ainsley McCammon created the chance from the left side, lifting a cross into the penalty area that Mercado met with a well-placed header. The goal was Mercado’s fifth of the season and extended her scoring streak to three consecutive matches.
Only three minutes later, the Reign struck again. Seattle earned a corner and kept the ball alive inside a crowded penalty area, with McCammon getting a head to the service before Jordyn Bugg redirected another header across the goal line. Bugg’s first goal of the 2026 season suddenly gave Seattle a 2-0 advantage before San Diego had reached the midway point of the opening half.
The Wave responded by generating opportunities of their own, but Seattle goalkeeper Claudia Dickey proved difficult to beat. Melanie Barcenas tested Dickey twice late in the first half, including a close-range header that the goalkeeper pushed over the crossbar. Seattle carried its two-goal advantage into halftime despite San Diego beginning to find more attacking space.
San Diego increased the pressure after the break and spent long stretches pushing Seattle deeper into its defensive half. Gia Corley forced another save from Dickey in the 58th minute with a low attempt toward the far post, while the Wave continued finding shooting opportunities around the Reign penalty area. Seattle increasingly relied on its defensive organization and goalkeeping as the match progressed.
The final statistics reflected how much of the ball and attacking territory belonged to San Diego. The Wave finished with 61 percent possession and outshot Seattle 22-9, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on target. San Diego also earned seven corner kicks compared with Seattle’s three. The 22 attempts were the most by an NWSL team in a single match this season, but none found a way past Dickey.
Dickey finished with eight saves, setting a single-game career high while earning her fourth clean sheet of the season. Her performance became increasingly important as San Diego pushed players forward searching for a way back into the contest. Seattle’s two early goals allowed the visitors to prioritize protecting their advantage, and the Wave were unable to produce the breakthrough that could have changed the closing stages.
There were still individual milestones for San Diego despite the result. Sandra Paños made her NWSL debut in goal for the Wave, while Adriana Leon made her first appearance of the 2026 NWSL season after entering in the second half. Melanie Barcenas also made her 50th regular-season appearance, becoming the youngest player in Wave history to reach that mark and the second-youngest in NWSL history.
The loss leaves San Diego with plenty to build on offensively but another reminder that possession and chance creation must be converted into goals. The Wave will now turn their attention to a road meeting with the Washington Spirit on Sunday, August 2 at Audi Field, where they will look to turn their attacking volume into a more rewarding result.
